Newdick Played With Injury

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Sept. 14. The Auckland professional, R. R. Newdick, played most of his golf in Britain and Europe during his recent tour under the severe handicap of an injured right wrist.

Each morning befqre teeing off in the British Open he spent an hour undergoing physiotheraphy treatment. Home after a 7s-month tour which took him through the Far East, Britain and Europe, Newdick said today that his injured wrist was in plaster for 12 days, and he lost about five weeks’ play at the height of the British season. Discussing his form in the first two rounds of the British Open, m which he scored well, Newdick said he had chipped and putted confidently.

“But my long game was not going well and I lost ground in the closing 36 holes,” he said. “1 am sure the injured wrist and lack of preparation affected my game.”

He now plans a break from golf for three weeks before visiting Australia for a month and then returning to play the New Zealand circuit.

Newdick says that R. J. Charles would play in New Zealand this season. He told Newdick during the British Open that he planned to play some tournaments here. Other players certain to return to New Zealand were the brilliant young South African, Cobie Legrange, and his country-men. John Hayes and Cedric Amm, both of whom cut short their tour last summer. Guy Wolstenholme (Britain) was also returning for the New Zealand circuit.
