Short-Term Care?

“This opens a wonderful opportunity for caring for a greater number of elderly people.” said the superintendent of the Methodist Central Mission in Christchurch (the' Rev. W. E. Falkingham). commenting on remarks by the • Minister of Health (Mr McjKay) in his address at the opening and dedication of the new wing at Wesley House ■Picton. on Saturday.

Mr McKay said that he hoped that the mission would be able to extend and strengthen the service it was providing for elderly people, smd that the possibility of using ! a few of the extra beds for i short-term care would not be overlooked. He had no doubt that a valuable contribution could be made at this level. Mr Falkingham said that If ;the home initiated a proI gramme of short-term care it i would mean that relatives of j elderly folk would receive i ! temporary relief from caring for them. What would in fact, be a holiday for the elderly would also improve their health.

“Many old folk cannot go away and live in a hotel. They need some place where they will be properly cared for,” said Mr Falkingham. Some of the residents of the old Wesley House moved into the new wing on September 7.
