BARK BETTER THAN BITE
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, Sept. 14. A firm of insurance brokers is so impressed by the way the presence of a barking dog reduces burglary risks that it is offering household contents policies prices for dog owners at 20 per cent discount. Premiums will be at £2 a £lOOO on contents values instead of the more generally quoted £2 10s a £lOOO. Only where the standard of property offers an exceptional incentive to burglars or housebreakers will the new rate not apply.
Mr Herbert A. Sheppard, of Tunbridge Wella, Kent, the head of the firm, says: “It doesn't matter whether the dog Is an Alsatian or a Pekingese.
“There is ample evidence that it is a deterrent to would-be raiders, at least so far as small or medium-sized houses are concerned. "We have to exclude country mansions and other properties obviously occupied by people of considerable wealth, criminals who tackle these are usually hardened professionals who know how to deal with dogs.”
