LIDO POOL DEFERRED

Control Over Building

The City Council’s lido pool project for Waltham Park has been deferred for 18 months by the building programmer.

His reason is that the pool is not of sufficient priority to warrant immediate approval The Government-appointed programmer is responsible for approving all building contracts in excess of £30.000 and 18 months is the maximum deferment envisaged in the recently-made regulations. i Cr. H. G. Hay, chairman of the council’s baths committee, said last evening that the citizens of Opawa and Sydenham would be deprived of an eag-erly-awaited amenity’. ‘ Further representations I would be made and it would be emphasised that tenders had been called some months before the new controls were implemented. When tenders were received the council thought there should be some economies made because of the finances available. “We would have been home and dried if we had accepted a tender when they came in,” he said, “but because of looking at financial cut-backs we were caught by the introduction of the regulations." Another delay in accepting a tender bad been caused by a further approach for Golden Kiwi funds for a supplementary grant to bring the pocl fund to £25,000. “We feel that it is hardly within the spirit of Government control that a project which has been planned for so long and for which tenders I had been called should now be deferred,” he added.
