GYMNASIUM APPEAL FOR HILLMORTEN
JJROBABLY few schools as young as Hillmorton High School could boast such an impressive list of sporting figures on their staff. At present D. Young, the former All Black hooker; G. Evans, captain of the Canterbury soccer team; Miss 11. Hutton, the New Zealand diving champion and a Canterbury basketball representative, and P. D. Carter, a Canterbury B and Otago Rugby representative are teaching at the school.
In any school sport plays a prominent part and it is for this reason that an appeal will be held next Saturday to help gain funds for the building of a gymnasium at the school. The estimated cost of the gymnasium is £14,000 but as it qualifies for a Government subsidy the amount that the school has to raise is about £5OOO.
Already the parents of pupils have responded enthusiastically to the project
and have raised £2OOO. Because the school is situated in a large residential area and appeal is now to be made in the Hoon Hay and Spreydon districts in an effort to raise the additional funds. A school gymnasium, while directly benefitting the pupils, becomes a community asset. The school officials feel their appeal should have the support of the district because of this.
