Magistrate's Court Used Obscene Language To 111 Operator

A man who dialled the emergency telephone number 111 and used obscene language to the operator was fined £lO when he appeared before Mr E. S. J. Crutchley. S.M.. in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Senior-Sergeant G. M:> Cleary said that on August 21 James Edward Hopkins, aged! 27. a locomotive assistant, was! having a dispute with his wife.; She threatened to ring the police, and Hopkins said he. would do it for her. The toll operator, Joan Charlotte Page,! answered the call to the emergency number and heard persons arguing. After queries by the operator, the obscene words were used and repeated. The call had been monitored by a police officer, and it was traced to the accused's home. He had admitted the offence; and said he had been drinking heavily. . Hopkins pleaded guilty. TWO CHARGES Charged with driving out- , side the terms of a Court order and supplying false information to a traffic officer on August 29 in Pages road, j William Joseph Wright,, aged 19, a labourer (Mr J. F. Burn), was convicted and fined £3O. and the period of cancellation | of his licence was extended for 18 months. He pleaded guilty to both charges. Traffic Sergeant H. J.! McMorran said that at 1.45 a.m. on August 29 Wright was seen riding a motor-cycle south along Breezes road towards the city, and was stopped in Pages road. Wright said that his name was John Joseph Williams, of 161 Breezes road. He then changed the address to 111' North street, Timaru. When he could not identify himself! he was taken to the traffic department, where he again said that he was John Joseph i Williams, of 111 North street, [ Timaru. He was taken to the I Central Police Station, where I he persisted with his story, j On August 30 Wright was found working at the Pacific I Scrap Metal Company in Port ! Hills road, where he was ini terviewed. On this occasion he gave his correct name, but denied being the driver of the motor-cycle in Breezes road and Pages road. ; Two sergeants, identified 'Wright, having seen him drive the same motor-cycle away from the traffic department in Manchester street on August 29. Mr Burn said that Wright had panicked. DRIVERS FINED AND . DISQUALIFIED Roy Ludwig, aged 22. a travelling salesman '(Mr G. R. Lascelles), whose speed was checked at 60 miles an hour in Pages and Buckleys roads, was fined £25, and his licence was cancelled for one year. He pleaded guilty to a charge of-driving at a speed which might have been dangerous. Charged with driving at a speed which might have been dangerous in New Brighton road on August 24, lan Frederick Hawes, aged 21, a carpenter, was convicted and fined £25, and his licence was cancelled for 18 months. He pleaded guilty. Evidence was given that the defendant's vehicle was I checked over two T intersections at 60 miles an hour in I New Brighton road and at 45 miles an hour over another two intersections in Seaview road. REMANDED , WilHam John Seddon, aged 23, a carpenter, was remanded ion bail to September 16 on a (charge of receiving from Nicholas Thompson goods to ! the value of £94, knowing that ! they had been obtained dishonestly. Robin- Michael Francis Sheedy, aged 22. a bushman (Mr JR. G. Blunt), was convicted and remanded on bail to September 27 on a charge of driving on September 2 while disqualified. He pleaded guilty. A charge of failing to produce his licence for endorsement was adjourned to September 27. George Cook, aged 25, a carnival hand, was convicted !and remanded on bail to September 27 for sentence on a charge of driving while disqualified. He pleaded guilty. Paul Richard Flutey, aged 18, a fish processor (Mr G. R. Lascelles), was remanded to September 16 on a charge of stealing three tins of oystars valued at £7 10s, the property of Fish Processing, Ltd. Bail was allowed. A man whose name was suppressed was remanded on bail to September 16 on a charge, of obscene exposure in a public place on September 13.
