RACING SECOND DAY AT ASHBURTON

Hushaway May Be Riccarton’s Best

Captain’s Command could give Wingatui its second John Grigg Stakes victory at Ashburton today, but there should be also a substantial improvement to the first-day score of seven wins for Riccarton stables.

Horses from J. C. Tomkinson’s and P. M. Jones’s teams won four of the eight races there on Saturday.

It will be surprising if there is no improvement to the records of these stables today. Horses from the Tomkinson stable engaged today are Hushaway, Pharasal and Standout.

First-Day Winner

Pharasal was one of two winners for the stable on the first day of the meeting. He is in the Methven Improvers’ Handicap today. Standout and Hushaway were making fresh starts after winter spells when they ran in the main handicaps on the first day of the meeting. Their chances in corresponding races today will be respected if they have firm footing again. Krazikid and Omasong, the two winners for the Jones stable on Saturday, are engaged again today.

Other runners for the stable are Miloutin, Jester Jinks and Allegretto.

Krazikid is in the John Grigg Stakes, Miloutin will be one of the stronger fancies in the Wakanui Maiden

Stakes, and Jester Jinks and Allegretto are in the T.A.B. double races, the Tinwald and Spring Handicaps respectively.

Mud Ruuners

Any change in track conditions could brighten the prospects of both Krazikid and Jester Jinks. Both have won on winter tracks. Krazikid’s close second to Carlsberg in the Cashmere Plate takes on added value in the light of Carlsberg’s Wanganui Guineas win on Saturday. R. J. Skelton, Jester Jinks’s rider in the Tinwald Handicap, will ride the John Stakes favourite, Captain’s Command.

The North Island jockey, R. W. Taylor, is being brought south to ride Pee Wee in the John Grigg Stakes.

Pee Wee rates a good chance in any conditions, and his chance will brighten if the ground becomes soft. He was impressive in winning the Aylesbury Handicap at the Grand National meeting.
