To Play Organ In Abbey
[From Our London Correspondent.]
Miss Gillian Weir, an organist from Wanganui, who scored a triumph with her recent performance of the Poulenc organ concerto on the first night of the London Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, has been given another honour. The Dean of Westminster, the Very Rev. E. S. Abbott, has announced that Miss Weir, aged 24, will be one of seven “organists of international repute” who will give recitals at Westminster Abbey next year as part of the celebrations of the nine hundredth anniversary of the Abbey’s consecration. The recitals will take place on the first Tuesday of each month from June to December. The exact date of Miss Weir’s recital is not known.
Miss Weir will play Handel’s organ concerto No. 5 in F with the 8.8. C. Concert Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall on September 25 as part of the Commonwealth Arts Festival.
