ORIGINATED RETAILING

The late Mr Montague Charles Butterfield, the father of the two present directors of the firm, was responsible for changing Butterfield’s business from wholly manufacturing to the present retail format.

In 1908, feeling that there was not sufficient in the business for both he and his brother, Mr Butterfield decided to go to Melbourne. Setting off for Bluff to get a boat, he stayed for a few days in Invercargill. There he was offered a position by one of the local manufacturers. He refused, but offered to hire bench room and use of machines and to sell his output to the firm.

The offer was accepted. After working in this manner for about three years he moved into premises of his own and formed the Southland Furniture Co. Ltd.

In his day, he was a very fine swimmer, winning Otago and Southland Championships for many years. In his only venture to the New Zealand Championships he swam second to the late Lord Freyberg.
