Incentive System

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. Industrial accident prevention in New Plymouth was aided by two unusual methods beer and lotteries—said Mr P. A. Young at the congress of the National Industrial Accident Prevention Association in Wellington today. Mr Young said one New Plymouth firm used a lottery ticket scheme to make workers more aware of industrial accident prevention. All employees of the firm were given a ticket with their wages. The lottery was drawn once a month, with a major prize and several minor prizes.

However, the winner was not eligible to collect his prize if he had lost time at work through accident during that month. Mr R. A. Riddick said his firm in New Plymouth had printed a book on safety. The book was discussed at meetings after work. “The men are encouraged by us putting on the odd half-gallon of beer,” he said. “The half-gallon at the end seems to enable the men to discuss what they’ve heard.” Mr Riddick said that since the scheme started the firm had enjoyed a three-month accidentfree period.
