NYLON IN CARPET

Introduction This Month The country’s largest manufacturers of floor coverings, Felt and Textiles of New Zealand, Ltd., is now introducing a proportion of nylon to the pile of its woven carpets. As from September 1 most of the carpets marketed by the company will be a blend of 80 per cent wool and 20 per cent nylon.

Announcing this the general manager of Felt and Textiles Distributors, Ltd., Mr R. Wilson, said this blend retained all the advantages of a pure wool carpet while adding considerably to its wearing life. “This 80/20 blend of wool and nylon has been tested in overseas countries for the last six years, and comprises the majority of all domestic carpet sold in Britain today. Substantial overseas contracts gained by Felt and Textiles have specified this wool and nylon blend.” To the average person the new carpet was virtually indistinguishable from the traditional 100 per cent woollen Axminster, said Mr Wilson. “It has all the good qualities of a woollen carpet, with the addition of longer wear, a greater resistance to crushing and ‘tracking,’ and the colours are not so susceptible to fading.”

The nylon and wool were blended before the pile yarn was spun and continuous checks were made to ensure that they were distributed through the pile evenly. The nylon-reinforced carpet had been introduced to the New Zealand market, said Mr Wilson, to cope with the heavy demands of modern living on household carpet. “We believe this new blend will provide an answer to this problem without a price increase,” said Mr Wilson.
