Aden Gunmen Kill U.K. Official
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) ADEN, September 2. Police were hunting today for two gunmen who murdered Sir Arthur Charles. British Speaker of the Aden State Legislative Council, last night.
The gunmen shot Sir Arthur Charles, who was 55, as he entered his car after playing tennis at the Sweepel's Club in Crater, Aden’s oldest settlement. He was the second Briton to be shot dead in the Crater district in the last four days. British police Superintendent Harry F. Barrie was shot down on SurZ .y. The terrorist activity is directed against Britain’s presence in Aden and the South Arabian Federation. U.N. Resolution A 1963 United Nations resolution demanded removal of the British base at Aden and self-determination for the Federation territories. The neighbouring Yemen claims the federation as part of its territory. In London last month, a conference of South Arabian political leaders broke up in deadlock when they failed to agree on an agenda for a constitutional conference on South Arabian independence by 1968.
Britain has declared her intention of bringing Aden and
the South Arabian Protectorate States to independence as a single State by then.
