Jaycees Told Not To Waste Time

A foundation member of the Christchurch Junior Chamber, Mr P. B. Watts, of Sydney f yesterday called on Jaycees everywhere not to waste a minute. The use of time was “terribly important,” he said. Mr Watts was the second president Of the chapter, a

president of the New Zealand Junior Chamber of Commerce about 1946-47 and president of Junior Chamber International in 1955.

The Christchurch Junior Chamber began its twenty-first anniversary celebration yesterday afternoon when it elected its foundation secretary, Miss I. V. Shrimpton, a life member.

Mr Watts said that in the last 21 years the 150 members and guests present had had U-million minutes to fill. “It is not abstract time: it is life,” he said. “And life in every one of us is ticking away.” Achievements which illustrated the remarkable progress the last 21 years included the development of computers and astronauts spending eight days in space. A new Qantas computer, handling reservations was able to reply to anywhere in the world in two minutes. Another computer, handling 25,000 messages daily could handle a message in miliseconds.

Mr Watts asked members not to underestimate the values that flowed from Junior Chamber activities.

‘lt is a very real thing,” he said. “I am not suggesting that you should ever ‘use’ Junior Chamber for specific purposes of business advantage. “If you build on selflessness, you will find this flows from selflessness—you are a better man.”

Mr Watts said there was a tendency in New Zealand to say “the Australians would put it over us." “Approach this in the proper spirit” he said. “1 am satisfied that Australians don’t want to put it over us, and New Zealanders don’t want to have it put over them either.”

Among those attending the anniversary lunch were the Mayor (Mr G. Manning), the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren), church leaders and city businessmen.

Senatorships were conferred on Messrs H. Royds and C. McLachlan.
