Shirley H.S. Boy Wins Eden Cup

(HZ. Press Association) PALMERSTON N„ Sept. 2. Churchillian phrases echoed in the Y.W.C.A. Hall in Palmerston North last night at the New Zealand final of the Royal Overseas League's secondary schools public-speaking competition. This was the seventeenth such competition held by the league since Sir Anthony Eden, now Lord Avon, gave a cup for annual competition in New Zealand schools, with the aim of encouraging children to develop the art of public speaking. This year’s subject, on which all contestants were required to speak, was “a particular field of endeavour in the life of Winston Churchil.” The winner was Warren Helm, of Shirley Boys’ High School (Christchurch). He

dealt with the 10-year “gathering storm” period when Churchill tried to warn Britain and the Commonwealth of the coming Nazi danger. The second place was awarded to Marion Hobbs, of St. Dominic’s College, Dunedin. who spoke on “Churchill, the fighter.” 1

The third placing was gained by Jocelyn Staples, of Palmerston North Girls' High School. The judges were Mr J. H. E. Schroder, of Wellington, and Professor R. Frean, of Massey University.
