Microphones In Embassy Walls
(N.Z.P.A-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, September 2. Britain’s Embassy in Warsaw, which cost £165,000, had been “bugged,” the Foreign Office has revealed.
Microphones were found in the walls of the building, which includes the Ambassador’s residence, where the Foreign Secretary, Mr Stew-
art, will stay during his official visit to Poland from September 17 to 21. A Foreign Office spokesman said: “The Embassy has been bugged, but 1 cannot tell you which part of the building had the listening devices.” Well-informed sources said Britain was considering sending a formal protest to the Polish Government before Mr Stewart’s visit, but that the visit itself was not likely to be affected.
The sources said that planting of such listening devices was considered to be a hazard at every Western Embassy in Eastern Europe. The microphones were reported to have been found during a routine check of the recently-completed building by British security officers
