PEOPLE IN THE PLAY
The selection of M. Denits (Canterbury Winter Sports Club) for the New Sealand team against Australia was no less than ieserved. Running at No.
12, he finished equal sixth ;n the special giant slalom ind would have been third had he not lost two penilty points. The course became so rutted it was closed after 40 runners. He finished fifth in the national giant slalom and ninth in the downhill, and was given a bad seed in each race.
The Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association can take little of the credit for the raising of £5500 in debentures and the gaining of 206 members for the Wilding Park Squash Club. The association secretary, Mr B. W. Crofts, gained about two-thirds of the members and about threequarters of the money single-handed in an effort possibly without parallel in Canterbury’s tennis history.
Speed about the court was the distinguishing factor between the top teams and the also-rans at the New Zealand Women’s Basketball championships. In the Canterbury team, C. McMaster stood out for the quickness of her movements to accept a pass and, if needed, unload to someone else.
