Letters From Citizens
(Neu> Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 25. Private citizens have expressed their opposition to provision in the sale of Liquor Amendment Bill for sports clubs’ charters.
“The whole idea of the association of drink and sport seems to me to be an unhealthy one,” a Methven resident wrote. “Any doctor or good athlete knows that alcohol is no friend to good per-
formance in any field.” This citizen said it was very plain that drinkinr among young people was increasing, but most alarming was the increasing number of young folk who were becoming alcoholics. A Christchurch resident maintained that the locker system in dubs would remain. “Any alleged undesirable features will be unchanged ar even aggravated by proximity to sources of liberal replenishment,” he said. A third letter—from Kaitaia —objected to provisions for licensed restaurants to serve a range of liquor and to trade on Sunday and Good Friday as well as to measures for sports dubs. “I have seen some good games in sport spoiled through liquor drinking,” the letter said. “I fed that after a tone, dubs wild depart from bowling as toe main function and liquor will take its ptace,” a Christehuxh resident wrote.
