Shipping Delays
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Aug. 25. Shipping delays to cargo for Wellington is worrying Dunedin manufacturers. A representative of the agents for the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company today blamed bad weather and labour problems for delays in Wellington. He agreed the situation was the worst it had been for three years. The company operates the only coastal service between Dunedin and Wellington. It maintains the service with three vessels.
Until a few months ago, the Holm Company’s coasters also
operated a service from Dunedin to Wellington, but this was withdrawn because of a shortage of cargo as a result of the popularity of the Aramoana with shippers.
Several Dunedin manufacturers said today that it had now become apparent that the three ships operated by the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company were insufficient to meet demands. These ships also served other South Island ports and Wanganui. They said that the position was likely to worsen within the next few weeks. The backlog was still building up while the ships were servicing other ports, and the Squall was due for survey at Lyttelton early in September.
