PROTEST BY UNION
Luxury Flats’ Permit (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 25. The Minister of Works (Mr Allen) has been asked by the Auckland Carpenters and Plasterers’ Union to explain the reasoning behind the building programmer’s decisions in approving work on a £250,000 block of luxury flats in Auckland and refusing to allow work to proceed on the Mount Smart sports arena. The secretary of the union (Mr A. Russ) said today a telegram had been sent to Mr Allen protesting against the programmer’s action. . ■ He said the programmer should not have given approval for this luxury project when other more urgent jobs, such as educational facilities, hospitals, housing and sports areas—avenues of building that serviced a broad crosssection of the public—were deferred.
