Magistrate’s Court Probation For Being Idle And Disorderly

“The way you are going, you are going to ruin your life in a very short time,” Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M.. told Tawera Pitman, aged 18. unemployed, in f’e Magistrate’s Court yesterday when he released her on probation for 18 months.

Pitman was appearing for sentence on a charge of being idle and disorderly at Lyttelton on August 18 in that she had insufficient lawful means of support. On further charges of breach of probation at Auckland and failing to appear for sentence on that charge, she was remanded on bail to September 8. The only alternative to probation was Borstal, and if Pitman committed any more serious offences, she: would be sent there.
