Memorial Trophy For Schoolboy League

The acting patron of the New Zealand Rugby League Schoolboys’ Council (Mr L. R. Huston) last evening presented to the council a magnifiicent trophy as a memorial to the late Messrs W. E. Desmond and K. Lippscombe. Messrs Desmond and Lippscombe died last year while respectively patron and vicepatron of the council. The trophy is about 30 inches high in gold and silver. It is inscribed “New Zealand Rugby League Schoolboys’ Council. Player of the Year.” On the base is the inscription “W. E- Desmond, K. Lippscombe Memorial Trophy. Presented by L. R. Huston, ' Christchurch, 1965.” The trophy will be won annually by the outstanding player at the national schoolboys’ tournament but will be held by the council. The council last evening decided to have a photograph taken of the selected player with the trophy, the photograph to be mounted and presented to the winner. The winner will be selected by

the chairman and secretary of the council or their appointees and one independent member.

The council will also commemorate Mr Desmond with a memorial plaque. It will be erected at the Linwood Rugby League clubrooms, the club of which Mr Desmond was a life member, until such time that the Canterbury Rugby League moves into its own boardroom, probably in the proposed new stand to be built at the Show'Grounds.

All schoolboy Rugby Leagues throughout the country will subscribe to the plaque, which commemorates Mr Desmond’s work for schoolboy Rugby League. Apart from his association with the council he was also a life-member of the Canterbury schoolboys' board after having been chairman, president and treasurer. Mr Desmond was also a life member of the Canterbury Rugby League as well as chairman and president and was assistant manager of the 1963 Kiwi team in Australia.
