Competition Close At the end of the thirteenth round of matches in the Canterbury inter-club badminton series, the competition is still closely contested in the top section. Points are: Christchurch I 8, Knox I 8. Railway I 8, Avonside 7, Christchurch II 7. The biggest individual surprise was the defeat of Mrs Miller, a division I player, by Mrs Brown Mrs Brown played her best match of the season against her experienced opponent. She kept Mrs Miller con stantly on the move with drop shots and clears, and won many points with a deceptive crosscourt smash which caught Mrs Miller moving in the wrong direction. P V. Boatwood maintained his singles record of the season by defeating his old adversary. A. G. Duckmanton, 11-15, 15-4, 1511. This match promised to be an interesting encounter, but turned out to be a drab affair, with both players playing too carefully. Results of both previous rounds are as follows: Avonside 3, Railway I 5 P. V Boatwood beat A. G. Duckmanton, 11-15, 15-4, 15-11: A. Karst lost to R. Miller, 9-15. 13-18: Mrs M. Brown beat Mrs M. Miller, 311, 12-10, 11-7; Mrs P. Boatwood lost to Mrs P. Duckmanton. 11-7. 7-11, 1-11. Boatwood and Mrs Brown beat Duckmanton and Mrs Miller, 15-3, 7-15, 15-6; Karst and Mrs Boatwood lost to Miller and Mrs Duckmanton, 5-15, 2-15: Roatwood and Karst lost to Duckmanton and Miller, 12-15, 15-18: Mrs Brown and Mrs Boatwood lost to Mrs Miller and Mrs Ducknianton, 615. 15-5, 5-15. Christchurch I 3, Knox 5 D B Reid lost Io B. Crofts, 15-11, 11-15, 16-18; T. Bradbury lost to E. Ogier, 8-15, 15-13. 15-17; Miss N. Baty lost to Miss S. Field. 4-11, 4-11: Miss E. Reaston beat Mrs P. Davidson. 11-5, 11-7. Reid and Miss Baty beat Crofts and Mrs Davidson. 18-15, 15-8: Bradbury and Miss Reaston lost to Ogier and Miss Field, 11-15, 5-15; Reid and Bradbury beat Crofts and Ogier, 15-8, 11-15, 18-15; Miss Baty and Miss Reaston lost to Miss Field and Mrs Davidson, 15-6, 12-15, » 15. Railway II 3, Selwyn 5 M. Ford beat R. Burrell, 15-11, 15-2; R. Kirton lost to J. McShane. 15-11, 7-15, 12-15; Miss E. Chandler lost to Miss B. Cormack. 6-11, 8 11; Miss R. Waites beat Mrs A. Ryan, 11-9, 5-11, 11-7. Ford and Miss Waites lost to Burrell and Miss Gormack, 15-5. 13-15, 3-15: Kirton and Miss Chandler lost to McShane and Mrs Ryan. 7-15, 9-15; Ford and Kirton beat Burrell and McShane. 15-7, 15-10: Miss Waites and Miss Chandler lost to Miss Gormack and Mrs Ryan, 3-15. 10-15. Canterbury’s division three representative team easily de feated South Canterbury by 12 matches to 4, to win the north ern section of the competition and qualify for the South Island inter-zone final on September 11.
