Fire In Flour Mill Put Out By Sprinklers
An automatic fire alarm and sprinkler System prevented a serious fire in the four-storey building of the Zealandia Milling Company, Ltd., at the corner of Hazeldean and Lincoln roads last evening. The fire broke out o.i the second floor of the flbur mills. Three men were working on night shift on the floor below. The alarm , bells and a deluge from the sprinklers was the first they knew of the fire. Three fire engines from the Sydenham and Headquarters stations were sent to the building. Flames were coming from the wooden second floor of the mill as the first firemen entered the building with a hose coupled to a fire hydrant in Haze l dean road. How-
ever, the sprinklers had the flames out before the firemen reached the second floor. The firemen removed charred flooring and played water on parts of the smoking mill machinery. A belt driving a roller in the mill appeared to have jammed against a wooden cover and caused the fire. The call was received at 7.35 p.m. Three minutes earlier, Headquarters station engines had been called to a suspected fire in a building at the corner of High and Lichfield streets. The emergency call proved to be a justifiable false alarm, and two of the machines were sent on to the mill fire by radio telephone.
