(N.Z. Press Association)
PALMERSTON N., Aug. 12. Gerard Anthony Ross, aged 18, a native of Eire, who was recaptured yesterday after escaping from the Rangitikei Prison at Lake Alice on the previous evening, had his gaol term increased by six months by Mr H. Rosen, S.M., today. Detective Senior Sergeant A. W. Baker said Ross was convicted at Auckland on July 14 on 11 charges of burglary and one of being absent without leave from the Corinthic. He was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment and ordered to be deported.
After the riots at Auckland gaol he was transferred to Lake Alice.
Last Tuesday night Ross broke a window in the prison kitchen with a meat axe, climbed a barbed-wire fence, which set off an alarm in the prison, and escaped.
