Streamers, Music As Navy Ship Sails

(N Z. Press Association-Copyright)

SYDNEY, August 12.

The Navy broke tradition yesterday when H.M.A.S. Vendetta left Sydney with streamers flying and music playing. Today, an admiral approved of the change and another was noncomittal.

The one who supported it is Rear Admiral G. G. O. Gatacre, former flag officer in charge of the east Australian area. He said he saw nothing wrong with streamers when Navy ships left “if it makes the men and their wives happy." But Vice-Admiral Sir John

Collins, former Chief of Naval Staff, had this to say: "Times change and customs change. Obviously these customs have come in now. Whether this was a good thing, I wouldn't know.” The Vendetta left from Garden Island for a six-month operational tour In the Far East Her captain, Commander D. W. Leach, obviously thought the music and streamers were a good idea—he instituted them. Mrs Leach was standing on the wharf waving farewell when Commander Leach threw the first streamer.
