Shirking Unions Will Face Fines

SYDNEY, August 12.
Government transport unions risk fines totalling £lO,OOO if they go ahead with another 24-hour strike.
Union officials confirmed this today after last night’s decision by 20 unions to hold another State-wide stoppage soon. There was also a recommendation last night for a third stoppage unless the Government met union demands. Since the transport stoppage on July 5, clauses have been inserted in the main awards banning strikes. Breaches of these clauses would leave each union involved liable to a penalty of £5OO. Such breaches are a continuing offence, carrying penalties for each day the unions remain in contempt of a court order. The next stoppage will be a protest against the State
Government’s latest wage offer, rejected by the unions yesterday. Union leaders have given no hint of the probable date of the stoppage. It is believed it will be fixed far enough ahead to give an opportunity for talks to be reopened with the Government.
