FORCE IN RHODESIA
‘War The Result’ (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LAGOS, August 12. Britain’s Commonwealth Secretary (Mr Bottomley) said yesterday that if Britain used force in Rhodesia it. would mean a war with serious economic consequences to Africa, Britain and the Commonwealth. Mr Bottomley said no-one should think that if Britain tried to use force to stop a unilateral declaration of independence it would mean the collapse of the Rhodesian defence forces.
Rhodesia had powerful defence forces and “it really would mean war,” he said. The economic consequences would be as disastrous as in the Congo, affecting not only neighbouring Zambia’s copper but the stability of commerce in all East Africa, with serious consequences for the British and Commonwealth economy.
