THANKS FROM MANILA
Money Sent Bv N.C.C. Warm gratitude for New Zealand help was expressed in a letter received from the Philippine Independent Church in Manila by the Rev. D. M. Taylor, general secretary of the National Council of Churches, this week. A sum of £5OO was sent to the Philippines after the islands had been struck by a chain of 24 typhoons in 1964. “This is to convey to the New Zealand Council of Churches the gratitude of the Philippine Independent Church for substantial and most timely relief funds forwarded to us through the World Council of Churches,” the letter stated.
The money was used for the reconstruction of over 30 parish convents and schools which had been destroyed on the islands of Luzon, Mindanao and Bohol. “Reconstruction should be complete within two months and by then we will be able to furnish you with a complete report with pictures of the newly built churches, convents and schools which shall serve the needs of 100,000 of our faithful. “We shall always remain grateful to the New Zealand Council of Churches for its magnificent response in our hour of mortal need. “For us the New Zealand Council of Churches shall ever remain the personification of the Good Samaritan.”
