SMALLER RATION
Indians In Big Cities (N Z Press Assn —Copyright) NEW DELHI, Aug. 11. i India has decided to impose progressive food rationing in major population centres to combat a chronic food shortage. The plan, which will affect food grains only, will begin early next year in Bombay, Madras, New Delhi and Calcutta—cities which have a population of more than 2,500,000. Limited rationing is already being imposed in Calcutta. Under the system, each person will be limited to 12 ounces of food grains a day. The present rate of national consumption is 14J ounces daily. Officials said if the plan was successful in the larger cities the Government would extend it to cities of more than one million persons, including Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Kanpur.
