WELLINGTON, August 10. New Zealand has recognised the State of Singapore. “New Zealand expressed from the beginning its support for inclusion of Singapore in Malaysia but emphasised that Malaysia must be set up in accordance with the wishes of all its people.” said the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) in a statement to Parliament today. “The New Zealand Government accordingly shares the regret expressed by the leaders of Singapore and Kuala Lumpur that it has not been possible to work out their differences in such a way as to enable Malaysia to remain united. “1 have told Mr Lee Kuan Yew that I welcome Singapore’s wish to remain within the Commonwealth and have informed him that New Zealand would support this desire to maintain diplomatic relations with Singapore. “The practical implication of the independence of Singapore for the area as a whole and for New Zealand’s policies will require study. Our interest, of course, is in the progress and stability of the area and its defence against aggression or the threat of aggression. “We must continue to work for those goals with Malaysia and an independent Singapore just as in ‘the past we have worked for them with Malaysia,” Mr Holyoake said.
