Ethiopia’s Victory

Issue (Specially written for “The Press" by KEN ANTHONY) T/ARLY in 1936, during the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, a firm of printers in Switzerland produced for the Ethiopian Post Office a set of five stamps intended to raise funds for the Red Cross. The 10 cent value, illustrated here, showed one of the native soldiers who took up arms to defend the country. Unfortunately, by the time the stamps, were ready for delivery, native resistance had been overcome and the whole country had been occupied by the Italians. Since it was impossible to send the stamps to Ethiopia they were sold off cheaply to collectors. In this way they achieved quite a wide distribution as mementoes of Ethiopia’s unavailing struggle against the invaders.
