Entries May Be Record Interest in this years Takahe-to-Akarea road running relay has exceeded expectations. Usually restricted to Canterbury clubs, the race is thrown open to ail harrier clubs in the country every Mth year. Already 33 firm entries hat e been received from clubs outside of Canterbury. With confirmation of some outside entries still expected and entries from Canterbury clubs yet to be submitted, the total number of eight-man teams contesting the race is expected to be between 60 and 65.

This easily exceeds the previous best entry of 46 teams for the 1950 centennial race. Winner of the last three open races—l9so, 1955, and 1960 Lynndale (Auckland) is among thdy entries again with three teams. The excellent response to this year’s race is particularly fitting for the event will be the twenty-fifth since the first was hold to 1935. The event was not run during the last war. A progress report on the entries was presented to a recent meeting of the Canterbury Cross-country running management committee, which organises the relay.
