Aeronautical Theme At Ball

The bustle of an aerodrome as seen from the cockpit of a plane coming in to land was the backdrop to the Canterbury Officers’ Club ball held last evening at the Winter Gardens. The theme was chosen in honour of the president, Flying Officer T. R. Caldwell. There were 440 present.

Black and white cartoons burlesquing the Queen’s regulations were placed on the mirrors in the alcoves while red, white and blue flowers and pot plants completed the bailroom scene. The supper tables also featured these colours in candles and flowers. Dominating the foyer were two large bowls containing white painted leaves, red arum lillies and chrysanthemums. In the Sapphire lounge where a buffet. dinner was held before the ball were heraldic shields. The guests were welcomed by Mr and Mrs Caidwell assisted by the vice-president. Mr J. L. McPhail and Mrs McPhail. They included the patron. Brigadier J. C. Campbell, the commanding officer of Southern Military District Headquarters, and Mrs Campbell, Group Captain J. D. Robins, commanding officer R.N.Z.A.F. Wigram, and Mrs Robins, Commander R. F. Sanderson, commanding officer H.M.N.Z.S. Pegasus, and Mrs Sanderson, Lieutenant-Colonel R. E. Johnstone, camp commandant Burnham Military Camp, and Mrs Johnstone, and Lieutenant C. A. Tweedie, president of the Canterbury ExNaval Officers Association, and Mrs Tweedie.
