MEDIATING ROLE

(N.Z. Press Assn— Copyright) PARIS, August 5. The French President, General Charles de Gaulle has written Peking’s leader in a possible prelude to Vietnam peace moves. President de Gaulle’s letter to the Chinese leaders was handed over in Peking on Tuesday by the Cultural Affairs Ministers, Mr Andre Malraux, the first French Cabinet Minister to visit there since Paris-Peking relations began last year. Government sources said it appeared in line with President de Gaulle’s current policy of warming up relations with Peking with an eye to a possible peace role in Vietnam at a later time.
