Kidnapping Gang Sought Widely

(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter —Copyright)

SINGAPORE, August 5.

Police began an island-wide hunt today for a big kidnapping gang after a gun battle in the Geylang district of Singapore.

A full scale battle broke out at dawn this morning between police and a gangster. The inhabitants of nearby houses had their sleep shat-

tered by machine-gun fire, the crump of hand-grenades exploding, sirens and shouting as the battle developed. About 300 shots were fired. One police officer and one gangster were killed. Another policeman was wounded. The dead policeman was Inspector Allan Lim, of the C.I.D. The charred body of the slain gangster, Ah Hiap, alias Morgan, was found near the window of a house. He was still clutching a machinegun. According to police sources, Ah Hiap and his gang were believed to be implicated in a recent attempted kidnapping of a Chinese millionaire, Mr Lee Boon Leong. Mr Lee’s father, a millionaire known as the “Biscuit King,” was kidnapped last year. His body was later found in a wooden box.
