Benefit Payments

Sir, —I wonder why the Government does not pay the widows’ pension every two weeks as this would enable budgeting to be done more easily. Monthly payments are far from satisfactory, as experience in this matter shows.—Yours, etc., WAKE UP, PENSIONERS. July 21, 1965. [The Minister of Social Security (Mr McKay) said: “At the present time widows’ benefits are paid each four weeks by way of an order book system and, because of the additional staff and equipment which would be required, this system could not readily be changed to provide for fortnightly payments. Experience has shown that the majority of widows are satisfied with four-weekly payments and the Government therefore has no intention at the present time of changing the method of payments of widows’ benefits. However, the use of computer methods in the future may alter the

situation and your correspondent’s views have been recorded and will be kept in mind.” ]
