Charles (New Zealand) was in second place on 68, four strokes behind the leader, Dick Sikes, of America, yesterday, in the 125,000-dollar Philadelphia golf tournament. Charles was tied with two Australians, Bruce Devlin and Kel Nagle, and an American, Bobby Nichols. The 25-year-old Sikes scored eight birdies in his eight-under-par 64 to emerge a clear leader after the first round. He had only 24 putts and missed by one stroke the course record of 63 set two years ago by Gary Player. Charles hit a No. 8 iron 145 yards into the cup at the sixth hole for an eagle and birdied four ether holes. Devlin had five birdies, and Nagle six. Eight players, including Arnold Palmer, were bunched at 69. The Masters champion. Jack Nicklaus, shot a 71, and Bruce Crampton and Player were on 72.
