NOTTINGHAM, August 6.
The Pollock brothers—Peter, aged 24, and Graeme, 21— were the toast of the South African cricket team at the end of the first day’s play in the second test against England yesterday.
Graeme, a lefthanded batsman, hit a brilliant 125 in 140 minutes to help South Africa total 269 after a disastrous start. Then, in the closing 35 minutes of play, Peter shattered England’s confidence by dismissing Boycott and K. F. Barrington in his first three overs for eight rims. At the close England was 16 for two. Cartwright’s Best The other highlights yesterday came from the England medium-paced bowler, T. W. Cartwright, who achieved his best figures in a test by finishing with six for 94 off 31.3 overs, and a fine supporting innings each by the South African captain, P. van der Merwe, and R. Dum brill. The South Africans lost their first five wickets for 80 before Pollock and van derI Merwe put on 98 in 64 minutes.
Pollock’s innings, which included 21 boundaries, was one of the greatest of all time. In 70 minutes before lunch he felt his way tentatively and made 34. After the interval he reigned supreme for another 70 minutes as he lashed the bowling for 91 out of 102. Pollock also passed his 1000 runs in test cricket. He so dominated the play that he added 72 at one stage while van der Merwe doubled his score from five. He scored the last 43 runs added before his dismissal.
