WAIMATE'S LOCKS

For a not particularly strong club, Waimate has had an astonishingly high standard of lock forwards in the last five years.

M. J. Scott played at lock for South Canterbury for several seasons, and also played for the New Zealand Juniors against the Lions in 1959. However, he last played representative Rugby in 1961 and his place was soon filled by R. H. Dench and M. J. Crowe.

Crowe (16st 51b) appeared a brilliant prospect in 1962 when he played six matches. However, he missed the 1963 and 1964 seasons.

This gave Dench his opportunity and he has been a regular member of the South Canterbury side since 1963. Weighing 15st 91b, Dench was made a South Island representative in only his third season of union Rugby, a splendid achievement for a tight forward.

Crowe has come back this season and, with his fine form in the Timaru trial, has joined Dench as lock forward in the combined North Otago, South Canterbury and Mid-Canterbury squad to play the Springboks on August 25. As they are the only locks in the squad, they seem assured of selection.
