BIG PRICE PAID

Three-year-old For Victoria The promising three-year-old, Johnny Chappelet, has been sold by his Irwell owner, Mr B. W. Ford, to Mr H. Holmfield, of Melbourne, at a high four-figure price. The sale was negotiated by National Mortgage and Agency Company, Ltd. Johnny Chappelet will be trained by G, Rothacker, one of the leading trainers in Victoria. Rothacker was in Christchurch earlier this week. As well as Johnny Chappelet he inspected several other horses without any business resulting. Johnny Chappelet, a showy colt by Johnny Globe from Chappelet, raced most consistently last season, gaining one win and six placings from eight starts. His win was in the Dunedin Stakes at Forbury Park in February when he beat Batavia. Johnny Chappelet will be shipped to Melbourne from Bluff tomorrow. The Sydney trainer, T. H. Gunning, formerly of New Zealand, also visited Canterbury recently. He purchased a two-year-old colt by Hi Lo's Forbes from Sporting Lady from Mr D. R. Millar, of Temuka. The colt is a halfbrother to a speedy but unsound pacer in Some Lad and is closely related to a former hardy pacer in Happy Man, a good winner in New Zealand and later an outstanding performer in Western Australia.
