CASHMERE H.S.

Provision Of Goggles Safety goggles will be supplied for the metal work rooms and the chemical laboratories in the Cashmere High School. This was decided at the monthly meeting of the board of governors afternoon. A charge of 2s 6d to 3s 6d annually will be made for use of the goggles to cover the cost of replacement. The headmaster, Mr T. H McCombs, said that the school had been functioning for 10 years without loss of an eye through accident in the laboratories, but there had been some comparatively serious accidents. Members agreed that pupils could not be educated in safety habits too soon. Gymnasium The gymnasium should be finished by the beginning of the new school year, said Vr McCombs in his report to the meeting. So far there had been no arrangements made for night classes or gymnasium classes. He noted that some classes in the nature of keep fit classes and post-natal classes were in demand, Lut he wondered if they should not offer hobby classes. Mr McCombs said that he thought the school was better off without night classes thought he was willing tn make the gymnasium available for suitable classes. Members were in fa' our of classes as a means of providing funds for additions and improvements to the gymnasium, but it was agreed that Mr McCombs should review the requests and report to the board at a later date TV Demonstration

Commenting on the recent demonstration of closed circuit television at the Teachers’ College, Mr McCombs said that the use of television in schools was so limited that it did not justify the expense. At university level it could be used effectively to multiply a lecture when all the class could not be accommodated in one room. The major use in schools would be in science, where a process such as dissection could be effectively demonstrated to the whole class. It could also be used in the Teachers’ College to demonstrate teaching practices to the students. The tutor could comment while the teaching demonstration was in progress. This would not be possible in a classroom.
