Student Views On C.M.T.

A motion that the Government be urged to abolish compulsory military training in any form was not put at the half-yearly meeting of the University of Canterbury Students’ Association. An amendment that it be not put passed on the voices. Persons were selected for compulsory military training undemocratically by ballot, one speaker said. Another speaker said his only argument against the present system was that “some were missed out.” He would prefer a motion calling for a return to universal military training. Other speakers agreed with this. Those who felt really strongly about the matter could become conscientious objectors, one said.

A motion that it be recommended to the Labour Department that the rights of conscientious objectors be more widely published was carried.
