FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A large intense anti-cyclone centred south-east of the South Island extends across the South Island on to the eastern Tasman Sea while a south-east airstream flows on to the North Island. Forecast: Canterbury.—Light or moderate variable winds, mainly north-east on the coast; cloudy areas and fog patches this morning; otherwise mainly fine but rather cold. Buller and Westland.—Light winds; fine with moderate afternoon temperatures. Nelson and Marlborough.—Fresh to strong south-easterlies in the Sounds; winds otherwise mainly light or moderate and variable; a few isolated showers in the Sounds, otherwise fine; moderate afternoon temperatures in sheltered inland places; cold tonight.
