N.Z. MASS MEDIA
I Bill To Keep Control (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 27. A bill to keep effective ; control of mass media in New I Zealand hands was “very close," the Prime Minister ilMr Holyoake) said tonight. “There isJLo bill for study yet, but over the months I there has been some work jdone,” he said. “But no bill has yet come to the Cabinet." Asked if the bill would be largely based on Canadian legislation which used tax penalties to deter overseas ownership of the domestic press, Mr Holyoake said the Canadian proposals were being studied. It was normal when creating new legislation to get ideas from around the I world. The bill would not necessarily be based on the | Canadian ideas. (The Canadian legislation would prevent advertisers I from claiming tax relief on | business advertising expenses : where advertisements are I taken in publications not three - quarters Canadian owned.)
