SURVEY BY Y.F.C.
Demand For Farms The Young Farmers’ Club Federation proposes to carryout a national survey to obtain information on the number of young farmers wanting farms and the amount of capital they have available, the Christchurch District Committee of Y.F.C. was told at its recent meeting. At the federation’s recent annual meeting land settlement was discussed and it was decided to carry out the proposed survey because one of the problems encountered in the discussion was lack of information on facets of land settlement. The federation’s next annual meeting is to be held in the Canterbury council area and the Christchurch district committee decided to apply to have the meeting held in Christchurch. A sub-committee, comprising the chairman (Mr G. R. H. Smith), and Messrs G. J. Barclay and R. F. Gilbert, was set up to meet Lincoln College authorities to see if a short course could be arranged for district members. Concern at the lack of opportunities for young farmers to attend short courses at the college was expressed by members at the meeting. It was hoped that arrangements could be made to improve the situation. In June next year, members of the Christchurch district will tour the southern Hawke’s Bay district, the committee decided.
The Ellesmere A team beat Ladbrooks A team in the final of the senior district debating competition by three points, the committee meeting was told. The winning team comprised R. F. Gilbert, B. D. Russell and K. A. Gilbert. This team will now meet Carinington Y.F.C. (Timaru district), in the first round of the Canterbury council competition. Darfield beat Banks Peninsula in the final of the junior debating in the Christchurch district, while St. Andrew’s College and Christ’s College have reached the final of the school’s section.
