MAGISTRATE’S COURT Year’s Gaol For Indecently Assaulting Girls

Two terms of one year’s Imprisonment, to be served concurrently, were imposed on Frederick Leslie Dix, aged 39, a postal assistant, when he appeared before Mr K. K. J Headifen, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for sentence on two charges of indecent assault on a female.

One charge concerned an assault on a girl aged six on or about July 3, and the other an assault on a girl aged nine on or about June 25. “The offences w£re despicable," the Magistrate told Dix, who was not represented. He had considered the matter carefully, the Magistrate said. When it came to the question of balancing his duty to the defendant and the best way of dealing with him and effecting his reformation with his public duty to protect children, then it was his view that he must have the greater consideration for the children. On a further charge of obstructing a police officer on July 3, he was fined £2O. Mr O’Reilly submitted that there had been an improvement in Millward’s character since he first appeared before the court. The Magistrate said that although prison or Borstal was the usual penalty for offences of this nature, he would not impose this on Mill ward, as he agreed with Mr O’Reilly’s submission. BENCH WARRANT A bench warrant was issued for the arrest of Mervyn John Walker, who failed to appear on a charge of dangerous driving on May 5 and a charge of driving while disqualified on May 25. IDLE AND DISORDERLY John William Mapstone, aged 20, unemployed, was p aced on probation for one year when he appeared for sentence on a charge of being idle and disorderly on July 18. Special conditions were that he pay £lO towards the cost of the prosecution, work and reside where directed, and open a post office savings account. pair of suede shoes valued at £4 19s 6d. The offence was committed on July 19. Special conditions of probation were that Mason pay £lO towards the cost of the prosecution, work and reside where directed, and open a Post Office Savings Bank account. Mason had above average intelligence, and it was time he made use of it, the Magistrate said. “There seems no reason why a person of your capability should appear’ before the Court.” SUPPRESSION GRANTED A man, whose name was suppressed (Mr A. Hearn), was admitted to one year’s probation, and was ordered to pay £lO towards the cost of the prosecution, when he appeared for sentence on a charge of assaulting a female on June 18. REMANDED Kenneth Clive Snow, aged 23, an order clerk, was remanded on bail to July 29 on a charge of false pretences to the value of £9. CHARGE AMENDED A charge of careless use of a motor vehicle in Normans road on April 17, against Arthur Delatour Johnston, jun., aged 23, a sales representative (Mr G. T. Mahon), was amended to one of exceeding 30 miles an hour. Johnston pleaded not guilty to the original charge, and guilty to the amended charge, on which he was convicted and fined £5.
