GIPSY FIRE LIKELY IN MANAWATU LEG

“The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. Some doubt exists whether Gipsy Fire will start, but if he does he should win the Winter Cup Trial, first leg of the Manawatu Hunt Club’s double at Awapuni today. In Gipsy Fire’s absence, Near Time would come into stronger favour. After winning the Pukehou Hack Hurdles on the second day of the Hawke’s Bay meeting, Gipsy Fire was accepted for the Vittoria Hack Hurdles at Trentham, but he did not keep this engagement. No reason was given for this scratching, but there was evidently nothing amiss with him. Gipsy Fire’s last win on the flat was in the October Hack Handicap, over a mile, at Trentham. He beat a strong field. Near Time, whose last win was also over a mile, is selected to give Gipsy Fire the most opposition. She finished well for eighth in the Waterloo Handicap at Trentham after being well out of it in the early running. Near Time worked reasonably well at Levin on Thursday and against this average class field she. could show the necessary improvement. Gyross, which has been lightlv raced this season, is expected to show improvement on that run for fifth in the sprint on the second day of the Hawke’s Bay meeting. He will be ridden by R. W. Taylor, who has been having a lot of success in first legs of T.AB. doubles lately. Diacol was one of . ‘ impressive wooers at Hastings on Thursday and if he ran as well here he would be a good prospect. Diacol wasted no time clearing hack class, but has since shown no useful form as an open-class galloper. He was schooled at Hastings on Thursday and this could sharpen him. Toureg won this event well last year after having hard races at the Trentham meeting and if he has come through his Wellington racing this year as well he would hav< to be rated at good chance. FROVfeN GALLOPER Dowdex is a seasoned and proven winter galloper and if he were to race up to his best form would have a grand show of winning. After that good fourth in the Seatoun Hack Handicap at Trentham, Samuel is expected to do better still and win the Tararua Hack Handicap, second leg ot the T.A.B. double. Semuel was a double maiden winner before coming to Trentham, but at his flrst start at the meeting he went poorly for

sixteenth. At his next start he battled on well for fourth after being second at the furlong. He worked well at Woodville on Thursday. TRENTHAM WIH Comrade followed two good runs on the earlier days with an impressive win in the Newtown Hack Handicap on the final day of the Wellington meeting. R. J. Skelton, who rode him when he won at Trentham, has stayed north and will ride him again today. Comrade is now running out hack nominations. Harvest Fair, which went poorly in the really heavy grounds at Trentham, should strike better going on Saturday and if this Is so should run an Improved race. Harvest Fair has only been lightly raced this season, and should be near his best by now. The track will be soft and cutting out.
