Search For Pistol
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 23. It is still not certain whether the pistol recovered by the police from Auckland Prison was the only weapon possessed by prisoners during the riot.
The police have ended their search without finding a second pistol which those prison officers attacked on Tuesday thought the inmates might possess. “Until we have completed our inquiries we will not be able to say,” said AssistantCommissioner A. G. Quin today. No individual was being singled out for special recognition, but all police, prison
staff, soldiers and firemen were entitled to share a general commendation for their conduct at the gaol, Mr Quin said. The under-strength force had nothing to do with the Army being called in by him, Mr Quin said. “I requested the Army to come in as an extra precaution. They were not for show. They were there for business,” he said.
