Fire Board Seeks To Advise On Buildings
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 23. It was illogical that the services of professional fire control officers were available free in Wellington, yet the city engineer was the sole authority for approving local building plans, the chief fire officer (Mr W. J. Henderson) told the Wellington Fire Board today.
Speaking of existing buildings converted to boarding houses he said he had seen partitions made from beer cartons. The board decided to approach both the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) and members of the Wellington City Council with a view to changing legislation and making
the local fire authority an advisory body on means of escape in new buildings. Mr Henderson said many existing buildings, particularly boarding houses, were dangerous. “If we were consulted by the . civil authorities many death traps would be avoided,” he said.
