Mr Holyoake Replies
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 22. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said today the Government would not be rushed into the type of “panicky measures” taken by Mr Nordmeyer in 1958. He was commenting on a statement earlier today by Mr Nordmeyer on the export earning deficit. The Government’s aim was to obtain a steady rate of economic growth, the Prime Minister said. “The Government could cut back the expenditure of overseas funds in the way Mr Nordmeyer did, but such measures checked the rate of capital formation and caused a continuing loss to the economy for years,” said Mr Holyoake.
